NEWS RELEASE:

MINISTER OF LABOUR MEETS WITH BARRIE CONSTRUCTION ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS

On Tuesday, July 20th, Minister of Labour, Peter Fonseca met with the Board of Directors of the
Barrie Construction Association at their offices on Victoria Street in Barrie.

The Minister is promoting his public awareness campaign, a 90 day blitz aimed at construction worker safety. With the tragic fatalities of four men who fell 13 storeys to their deaths from a suspended construction platform on Christmas Eve, the Ministry of Labour will be visiting construction sites in Ontario to raise awareness of enforcement and safety.

Ontario will be taking additional action to improve the safety of workers on construction sites by increasing enforcement of regulations and enhancing awareness of safety measures.

The Barrie Construction Association is committed to safe work places for employees and assists its members with this mandate through sponsorship of the WSIB Safety Group and the Association is a member of the Regional Labour-Management Health and Safety Committee.

Issues brought to the Minister by the Board of Directors included the controversial Bill 119 which amends the Workplace Safety Insurance Act to extend premiums to owners of companies and the need for additional amendments to the Construction Lien Act to ensure lien rights and the timely release of holdbacks.
